September 01, 2025
Important Notice: Microsoft will officially discontinue support for Windows 10 starting October 14, 2025. Although your Windows 10 PC will continue to operate beyond this date, Microsoft will cease providing essential services like security patches and technical assistance that keep your device secure and functioning optimally.
Why Every Business Owner Should Care
- Increased Security Vulnerabilities: Without ongoing updates, your system becomes an easy target for viruses, malware, and cyberattacks. Protecting your business data means upgrading to a supported Windows version is essential.
- Software Compatibility Challenges: Many applications are designed to work seamlessly only with the latest operating systems. Once Windows 10 is retired, some software may malfunction or stop working entirely.
- Regulatory Compliance Risks: Businesses handling sensitive data or abiding by strict regulations risk non-compliance if they continue using outdated systems, which can lead to fines or legal complications.
Your Upgrade Options Explained
Microsoft recommends upgrading to the latest Windows version before support ends. However, not all Windows 10 machines meet the hardware requirements for Windows 11. Attempting an upgrade on incompatible devices will trigger error notifications.
If your PC cannot support Windows 11, consider these alternatives:
- Purchase a new PC compatible with Windows 11
- Enroll in Extended Security Updates (ESU) — see details below
- Switch to a Linux operating system
- Avoid ignoring this deadline - it places your business at serious risk (not recommended!)
Before proceeding with any change, always back up your important data to prevent any loss during the transition.
About Extended Security Updates for Windows 10
If upgrading immediately isn't feasible, Microsoft's Extended Security Updates provide a temporary safety net for up to one year after October 14, 2025. However, this is only a short-term fix and not a permanent solution.
To access ESU, you can either pay a fee of $30 or redeem 1,000 Microsoft Reward points to register. A free option exists but requires enabling Windows Backup to synchronize your files and settings with OneDrive. While OneDrive offers 5 GB free storage, additional space may be needed for extensive backups.
Do not delay registration; enrollment must be completed before the October 14 deadline to qualify.
